One amazing fact about WNY is that you have so many areas within your reach to explore and enjoy. That means lots of dates! One such spot is along the Niagara River in Tonawanda, near Niawanda Park. A childhood staple and now an adult must, we ventured a short drive from downtown Buffalo to Old Man River’s- a mere 20 minutes- to enjoy a sunny day date and walk along the river.

We love this date on Sunday’s because it can be a quick event or an all-afternoon siesta. Old Man River is one of WNY’s ultimate ‘hot dog stands’ with outdoor seating, a clam bar, and a river breeze. We always revert to kids when we stop here since we grew up with an OMR’s in Lockport (now One-Eyed Jack’s)! Feeling as if you’re at an old vacation town shack, OMR’s is the epitome of a classic summer: Sahlen’s hot dogs, Angus burgers, sweet potato fries, and steamers- and having been around for over 30 years, it has perfected the delicious grilling flavor. It is a great place for couples, families, & friends and is quite busy on any given day. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday they offer live music 5:30-8:30pm and Clam Jam on Thursdays where you receive a 1/2 dozen clams free with order of a full dozen. After OMR’s, take a walk down the road to Mississippi Mudds to grab some ice cream (these two are in cahoots together and with Berrafato’s). OMR offers a small summer cool-down as well, but MM is where you should head for more options. Serving up Perry’s, Mississippi Mudds also has a decent sized sundae list as well as milkshakes, smoothies, fat free frozen yogurt, and sugar free. There is lower and upper level seating (outdoors) and an inside patio as well. Also dishing up hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches- MM can be another option for food on your date as well. MM has the same old-school summer feel as OMR’s with the old beach-side building and view of the water. Another packed place! (check out their menu here! —> MM Menu )

Are you full yet? Take your ice cream across the street and walk along the Niagara River in Niawanda Park. Well kept paved pathways for bikers and walkers give way to stroll along the waves and bask in some sunshine. There are picnic tables and benches periodically through out the stretch and short piers you can sit on out on the water. This park is part of the Shoreline Trail and Greenway Trail which extends from Niagara Falls to the Outer Harbor in Buffalo. We think it’s great when there are spots along the water with walkable paths, a great summer food hot spot, and ice cream! This makes for a perfect Sunday (or any time!) together!
