Why Is Babylovebird So Happy?

Babylovebird, Chloe

This chapter is a hard transition. No no, not because it feels overwhelming and nerve-wracking…because it is a massive lifestyle change for both of us. Always on the go has been the norm for many years and suddenly *bam!!*…there is a small human in the mix. But, hey, she is pretty cute so we aren’t complaining. Perhaps we are biased?

As first time parents, we have been learning (quickly) what our tyke likes and how to utilize it all to make her comfy and happy. They say a baby’s demeanor is half genes, half environment and if that is the case, we know Chloe gets her happy genes from both parents and is surrounded by fun. A lot of people have been asking questions on what we have for Chloe in making sure she is a happy and a well-rested babe, so we thought we would share what we think attributes to her calm and cool nature. Here is our list of favorite baby necessities:

Dock-A-Tot

chloe dockatot teal
dock-a-tot // Oliver + Kit swaddle // Chloe
Hands down the best thing we ever bought! It’s a Swedish-design made for babies to sleep in and feel comfy like they are in the womb. We love that it is portable and lightweight. Chloe sleeps in this anywhere we put her- living room floor, kitchen island, bedroom, visiting her grandparents…If anything, get this for your little one- we swear by it!

Muslin Swaddles

Chloe with Little Unicorn Bison swaddle

We blame Instagram for showing us so many damn cute baby things! Two of our favorite swaddle designers are Little Unicorn and Oliver + Kit…both have beautiful, colorful, fun swaddles that we (ok, me…) couldn’t stop ordering. They’re soft, stretchy, and fun to look at. Chloe sleeps best when swaddled (very snug, with arms lowered). She naps like a champ in between feedings and has been sleeping a solid 5-6 hours each night since she was 6.5 weeks old. We’ve tested her without swaddling…and all we get is a break-dancer who is trying to beat the Guinness Book of talking the most.

Honest Diapers

honest diapers
you can pick the patterns you want each month, too

Honest has adorable prints on their diapers- and who doesn’t want cute undies? For Chloe, they have been working great (even with a few blowouts) and fit her well. Her size was sold out almost every time we hit up stores, so we opted in to their monthly diaper & wipe bundle online and get it all delivered to our door. Easy!

Fawn Design

Determined to be a #CoolMom, I went in to the search for a baby bag early on. I kept coming back to Fawn Design’s backpack/crossbody bag which is made of faux leather- super easy to clean and holds everything Chloe needs. I think the best part of it is we can use it as a backpack- it has made it easier to carry the babe around and get in the car.

MamaRoo

This tech-y chair has several settings that put Chloe right to sleep. It’s quiet, lightweight, and you can hook up your phone to it to play your own music or white noise. So when we need to clean up in the kitchen or put away laundry, we buckle her in to get some free time in. Works best for us after a car ride- when she is hardcore passed out- and we get her in it to stretch out a longer nap.

Dr. Brown’s

dr-browns-4-oz-options-bottle-3-pack-60960116-01

The very first bottles we purchased to try out were Dr. Brown’s and there’s no looking back. The Options system has been working like a charm with it’s reduced-reflux vent system; and we liked that the starter box gave us small bottles for when she is little and large for when she increases her formula.

Bose Speakers

The Bose Soundlink Bluetooth speaker sits in Chloe’s room so when we feed her at night time, we can make sure soothing music pumps through to keep her relaxed. Use your phone to open Spotify and link it to the speaker. As an Ethnomusicologist and World Music instructor, Chloe gets some interesting music to zone out to! Some Native American flute gets her to fall asleep quickly after she eats!

Skip Hop Travel Changing Pad

pad

The best thing about keeping the travel pad around is you can move it anywhere you need within seconds. Chloe is up on a table with the Skip Hop Pronto pad so we aren’t going upstairs every time we need to change her. Leaving the house? *zip zip* Pack the pad with you and throw in your bag. Quite useful for car trunk changes on the fly!
What works for you and your babe?

Introducing: Chloe, Our Baby Lovebird

omg. dimples. cannot handle!

We are so proud to introduce you to our little babe: Chloe O’Hara Riggs! She is here- finally! And everything is so surreal…pinch us- are we dreaming?

Chloe made her debut on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 10:25am at Sisters Hospital, weighing 7lbs .8oz and 20 inches in length.

Chloe O’Hara Riggs

Her story started Monday , March 6 at 6:30am and after a wild 26 hours of unmedicated labor (yep, I am stubborn and tough)- the last 2 hours with an epidural suddenly became the only timeframe we cared about. With Baby Daddy Beau by my side every second of the way, the intense bond and experience we had together took us to another level. (Oh my, cliche, yes we know)

When she arrived, the dream began. Not only was she there in person- which is so wild still for me to even fathom that a little person was in my belly- but our new chapter started in an instant.

The entire Labor & Delivery staff at Sisters may just be comprised of real angels on Earth. After going through three rotations of nurses, we had a nonstop incredible experience with every person we encountered. Even when it was showtime, we were cracking jokes with everyone in the room (a party of 6 staff) and our doctor was quoting Chapelle and R. Kelly lyrics with Beau. The next day, Beau ordered a slew of ‘Pretty in Pink’ smoothies from Squeeze to bring the the staff. He thought: healthy, pink for Chloe, and a natural boost for their long hours.

What’s in a name?

We had known Baby Lovebird’s name for several  months (a secret!). It was an instant and mutual love for it. We always wanted the middle name to honor a grandparent. Suddenly, Beau mentioned his grandmother’s maiden name: O’Hara. She had been proud to be of that lineage and Beau fondly remembers her speaking about how this was ‘who she was’. His Grandma had been an extremely important woman in his life and we thought this was the perfect way to honor her. So became Chloe O’Hara (how ‘Gone With the Wind’!)

C-Dog, the nickname given to her by her Dad ages ago, has been the perfect little baby…..so far! She has met a lot of family and will meet more friends this week. We have become that legit cliche of staring at your baby nonstop and suddenly feeling like all you want to do is protect her and try to make the world perfect.

So pinch us next time you see us- we have been doing it every day. Chloe O. is here and we could not be more ecstatic and in love!

Photos taken by the hospital photographer, Andrea- who recognized me from when I moderated a panel last fall at an entrepreneurial artist boot camp! Small world, Buffalo!

Welcome to My Crib: Baby Lovebird’s Nursery

It’s D-Day.

Or, at least, it was supposed to be.

Babies typically never arrive on their guesstimated date but we were so hoping that Baby Lovebird would make a grand entrance today. C’mon, weekend! We are banking now on her arrival over the next couple of days. Big Daddy Beau can barely contain himself and I am now simply tapped out. Ladies, you weren’t kidding when you said the last month is the hardest! Whew. And having three girlfriends, who were ‘due’ after Baby Lovebird, already have their babies this past week- makes me even more antsy and flustered.

But having the extra time at home this week gave us the chance to put more touches on the little tyke’s future room, giving us some relief and sense of nesting. There are still a couple more things we want to add in but we thought we would share what we have now!

Early on last summer, we knew we wanted to do a monochromatic room with greys, whites, and black. Babies see blacks and whites in their early weeks and months of coming in to the world and it helps stimulate them visually. We thought that was a neat fact! It helps that current nursery trends are modern and classic so we went for it. The style fits ‘us’ as well- we like to be up on what’s ‘in’.

I always had a vision for what the room would look like, so you can imagine the excitement a 40 week pregnant lady would feel when it all starts coming together!

Here is the scoop on what we placed in her room:

Crib: Pottery Barn Baby, Emerson // Bedding: Pottery Barn Baby (Hadley and Teagan) and Target // Mobile: a black & white origami display from Ollie and Penny

Japanese Maple Artificial Tree: Pier 1 // end table: Pier 1 (painted by my Dad to match the grey scheme) *sold out // Pineapple Lamp: Target

Wait…a Wu Tang poster? Yes- you are seeing that! We had this in our bedroom at the Hotel Lafayette after picking it up at an Elmwood Art Festival a few years ago. Thanks, WNY Book Arts! They designed this when the clan performed at Town Ballroom in Buffalo. Beau is a massive old-school hip-hop fan and as for me, being a musician and who teaches Ethnomusicology, this design totally makes sense. We wanted pops of color in her room and Wu Tang brought it. #CoolBaby

Dresser: vintage- my Mom’s dresser when she was a baby! Painted by my Dad to match // Animals: Pottery Barn Baby // Vase: Target // Stems: Hobby Lobby // Onesie: Carter’s // Poster: WNY Book Arts
